The landscape design for this weekend retreat in Water Mill, NY focuses on creating outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed both for friendly gatherings, and for peaceful relaxation. The design of the rear yard creates an inviting series of spaces that transition between the home’s interior, taking full advantage of several mature trees on site and of the natural privacy offered by the property’s location. The layout centers around a pool and cascading spa, framed in bluestone and surrounded by lawn. A rear deck spills down to a pool terrace with long, oversized wooden steps, creating a seamless flow between the pool and the home. A sizable lawn space is defined by a system of plant beds that transform every view into that of a garden oasis.

 

A stone mulch drive and bluestone entry paths greet visitors to the home. A stylistically “Long Island” planting palette featuring Boxwood, Hydrangea, and ornamental grasses is introduced at the entry, and repeated throughout the property. Masses of Roses, Ferns, and flowering perennials provide variety and seasonal interest to the planting strategy. The site’s existing mature trees were carefully protected during installation, and a variety of new trees and shrubs were planted in a mixture of evergreen and deciduous species. Shady areas beneath large trees feature lawn paths that wind between lush plantings of flowers and ferns.
